The Road Back to School in 2020

This is an open blog for educators to ask questions and share ideas about the opening of schools for September 2020 and beyond. The forum has a targeted audience for social studies supervisors and teachers to explore smart ways to engage students in learning during the unpredictable months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We ask that you include your name and contact information to each post and that you include links to appropriate resources and files instead of including them as part of your blog.

Hank Bitten, NJCSS – Hybrid Model: 25% Enrollment based on Grade Levels

NJ State Requirement: 7,200 minutes (180 days* 40 Minutes)

Monday (example) – Social Studies: 5 classes x 40 = 200 minutes or 6 classes = 240 minutes

At 9 weeks = 2,160 minutes of in-school instruction. See below 5,500 minutes of home instruction. Consider contacting local cable TV station to broadcast live instruction from the classroom to the students at home.

Daily Schedule (Sample, Customize to local settings)

½ Day model: 200 minutes (Morning and Afternoon classes_

8:00 – 10:00 (120)               12:30 – 2:30 p.m. (120)

10:20 -11:40 (80)   2:50 – 4:10 p.m. (80)

Full Day model: 240 minutes (Each class is 90 minutes)

8:00 – 9:30    (90)

9:45 – 11:15 (180)

11:20 – 12:00 Lunch

12:05 – 1:05 (240)

 1:30- 2:30 (300 or 60 for Guidance, Art, Music, etc.)

Tuesday – English/Language Arts

Wednesday – Science

Thursday – Math

Friday – Electives (World Languages, Art, PE, Music, Financial Literacy, etc.)

             Elementary     Middle School             High School

Week 1 –             Grade 1                Grade 6                                Grade 9               

Week 2 –             Grade 2                Grade 7                                Grade 10                             

Week 3 –             Grade 3                Grade 8                                Grade 11

Week 4 –             Grade 4                Grade 5                                Grade 12

Interim Weeks = Home Instruction or Instruction at an off-campus site

15 days @ 40 minutes = 600 minutes per month. (9 months = 5,400 minutes)

5,400+2,160 = 7,560 minutes = +360 minutes or 6 hours above and beyond the state requirement.

Assign teachers to 1 or 2 preps
